The Six Spellings of Long E

The Six Spellings of Long E The Six Spellings of Long E The Six Spellings of Long E By Maeve Maddox Some of you have had the opportunity to attend, but we wanted our members to have a sneak peak at what they have to offer. The above quotation is from a club announcement. The words sneak peak certainly seem as if they ought to match, but the word peak is a misspelling in this context. The word meaning a surreptitious look is spelled peek. A peak is a projecting point. As I pointed out in English Spelling is Not Total Chaos, English has more phonograms (sound symbols) than it needs. This multiplicity of spellings applies especially to the vowel sounds. Long E is the vowel sound represented by the e in me. This long e sound can also be represented by five other phonograms: ee Achilles was wounded in his heel. The double e spelling ee always represents the long e sound: see, kneel, feel, tee (golf term). ea Physician, heal thyself. Long e is the most common sound represented by ea: read, zeal, appeal, deal, meal, real. (The spelling ea can also represent two other vowel sounds.) ei That man is filled with conceit. This ei spelling for long e occurs in words in which the ei follows the letter c: ceiling, conceit, perceive, receipt, receive. (Theres a rule that often helps: i before e except after c) ie Lets plant oats in that field. Long e is spelled ie in several common words: believe, belief, brief, chief, field, niece, priest, siege, achieve, piece. ey Follett wrote The Key to Rebecca. The ey spelling for long e is not common in one-syllable words. Key is the only one I can think of. The phonogram ey to represent long e does appear at the end of two-syllable words like valley, alley, and galley. (The spelling ey more often represents the long a sound, as in they.) Its too bad that we have so many ways to spell the long e sound, but its probably too late to do anything about itother than learn the variants. Even Richard Mulcaster (1531-1611), an early advocate of English spelling reform, had to concede that No set of rules can cover all points; some things must be left to observation and daily practice.* *Baugh, A History of the English Language p. 255) Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? How to Keep in Touch with Friends from High School

How to Keep in Touch with Friends from High School While college often leads to a new city, a new school, and new friends, your new college life doesnt have to come at the expense of your high school friends. But how exactly can you keep in touch with your friends from high school when youre busy managing all that college has to offer? Use Social Media Things like Facebook and Twitter are likely already a part of your social life. As you transition from high school to college, using social media to keep your friends updated and to stay updated about them can shift from something of interest to something important for your friendship. With a little work, you can stay informed about relationship updates, school changes, and the overall ups and downs of your friends lives. Use the Phone and Video Chat Using tools like Facebook can be great but they are often a rather passive way of keeping in touch with someone. Sure, a friends status update may say one thing, but a heart-to-heart chat on the phone can tell you so much more. While they dont have to happen frequently, phone calls and video chats can be an important part of how you keep in touch with your high school friends. Use IM You really need to finish your paper but your brain needs a break. That being said, you dont necessarily have the time for a phone call or video chat. The solution? Consider a quick IM conversation with one of your high school friends. You can give your brain a break while also checking in with a friend. Consider it a win-win situation (as long as you get back to your paper within a few minutes, of course). Use Email You may be used to communicating via text messages, IM, and video chat, but email can also be a great tool. When its 3:00 in the morning and you need something to do to shift your brain from your Shakespeare paper to sleep mode, consider spending a few minutes drafting an email to an old high school friend. Update them about your own college life while asking for the latest news on their end. Meet Up Whenever Possible No matter how great technology is, theres just nothing like a face-to-face meeting. Meeting up in person is important if youd like to maintain your high school relationships both during and after college. Remember, too, that you can meet up in all kinds of places: back in your hometown, at your campus, at your friends campus, or even somewhere fun you both have always wanted to go. (Vegas, anyone?)

Personal Statement for Graduate School Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

For Graduate School - Personal Statement Example The opportunity to assist in the birth process has always been appealing to me. Recently, I have had opportunity to attend the deliveries of three close friends. This experience has reinforced my desire to become a midwife. Perhaps the most personal reason I want to study midwifery stems from the fact that I am currently pregnant and am seeking a midwife. I want to provide competent services to other women as they prepare to deliver their babies. I am hoping to find this for myself. Most of all, I want to continue to have positive clinical experiences as a nurse. My most satisfying clinical experience was caring for a patient that had been in a motorcycle accident. He came in with a serous pelvic fracture that was causing profuse rectal bleeding. I was able to assist this patient throughout the CT scan and several procedures required to keep his blood pressure up. When we took him to interventional radiology as requested, the doors were locked and no one was there to help. At that point, the patient’s life was in my hands. I made the decision to take him directly to his room in the Critical Care center. By the time we were able to get him there, he was just clinging to life. We worked to get him stabilized and he was admitted for the night. This was a satisfying experience because it shoed me that I could make difficult decisions in high-pressure situations. I was commended for making the decision to take him directly to his room instead of waiting at the interventional radiology department. I was actually there for that patient so he could tell me to speak with his wife when she arrived. He said, â€Å"Tell my wife I love her.† I felt great about my performance that day, but was extremely upset to discover the next day that he did not live through the night. Seeing people come into the hospital walking and talking but then never leaving is

Most valuable lessons learned from this Business Ethics course Essay

Most valuable lessons learned from this Business Ethics course - Essay Example A very interesting finding that I learned after completing the course is that the ethical conduct of workers varies depending on the culture. In many Asian countries such as India and China bribers are visualized as part of doing business. In contrast U.S. businesspeople perceive bribes as an unethical act that must be avoided at all cost. The concept of social corporate responsibility has raised the ethical standards of business communities across the world. Acting in an ethical manner can help improve the corporate image of a company. In contrast unethical behavior can destroy the reputation of a firm. During the late 1990’s Nike Corporation was involved in a sweatshop scandal that hurt the company so much that in its aftermath the company lost half its annual sales. One of the greatest lessons that I learned from the course is that my professional future and potential opportunities in business can be enhanced by becoming an ethically responsible

Imagery and Metaphor in Wilfred Owens Dulce et Decorum Est :: Dulce et Decorum Est Essays

Imagery and Metaphor in Wilfred Owen's Dulce et Decorum Est  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The poem is one of the most powerful ways to convey an idea or opinion.   Through vivid imagery and compelling metaphors, the poem gives the reader the exact feeling the author wanted.   The poem "Dulce et Decorum Est," an anti-war poem by Wilfred Owen, makes great use of these devices.   This poem is very effective because of its excellent manipulation of the mechanical and emotional parts of poetry.   Owen's use of exact diction and vivid figurative language emphasizes his point, showing that war is terrible and devastating. Furthermore, the utilization of extremely graphic imagery adds even more to his argument.   Through the effective use of all three of these tools, this poem conveys a strong meaning and persuasive argument.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The poem's use of excellent diction helps to more clearly define what the author is saying.   Words like "guttering", "choking", and "drowning" not only show how the man is suffering, but that he is in terrible pain that no human being should endure.   Other words like writhing and froth-corrupted say precisely how the man is being tormented.   Moreover, the phrase "blood shod" shows how the troops have been on their feet for days, never resting.   Also, the fact that the gassed man was "flung" into the wagon reveals the urgency and occupation with fighting. The only thing they can do is toss him into a wagon.   The fact one word   can add to the meaning so much shows how the diction of this poem adds greatly to its effectiveness.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Likewise, the use of figurative language in this poem also helps to emphasize the points that are being made.   As Perrine says, people use metaphors because they say "...what   we want to say more vividly and forcefully..."   Owen capitalizes greatly on this by using strong metaphors and similes.   Right off in the first line, he describes the troops as being "like old beggars under sacks."   This not only says that they are tired, but that they are so tired they have been brought down to the level of beggars who have not slept in a bed for weeks on end.   Owen also compares the victim's face to the devil, seeming corrupted and baneful.   A metaphor even more effective is one that compares "...vile, incurable sores..." with the memories of the troops.   It not only tells the reader how the troops will never forget the experience, but also how they are frightening tales, ones that will the troops will never be able to tell without remember ing the extremely painful experience.

Is Psychology a Science Essay

Psychology is commonly defined as ‘scientific’ study of human behaviour and cognitive processes. Broadly speaking the discussion focuses on the different branches of psychology, and if they are indeed scientific. However, it is integral in this to debate to understand exactly the major features of a science, in order to judge if psychology is in fact one. There must be a definable subject matter – this changed from conscious human thought to human and non-human behaviour, then to cognitive processes within psychology’s first eighty years as a separate discipline. Also, a theory construction is important. This represents an attempt to explain observed phenomena, such as Watson’s attempt to account for human and non-human behaviour in terms of classical conditioning, and Skinner’s subsequent attempt to do the same with operant conditioning. Any science must have hypotheses, and indeed test them. This involves making specific predictions about behaviour under certain specified conditions, for example, predicting that by combining the sight of a rat with the sound of an iron bar banging behind his head, a small child will learn to fear the rat, as is the case of Little Albert (1923). Also, empirical methods are used in scientific fields to collect data, relevant to the hypothesis being tested, as is the case in many psychological experiments, such as the use of brain scanning in Dement and Kleitman’s 1957 study. Science is meant to be objective and unbiased. It should be free of values and discover the truths about what it is studying. Positivism is the view that science is objective and a study of what is real. For example, schizophrenia, when diagnosed as being caused due to excess dopamine, is being studied in a scientific manner. The explanation does not take into account any cultural customs or individual differences that might lead to ‘schizophrenic’ behaviour. However, even in scientific research like this the person is doing the diagnosing has his or her own views, and may misinterpret behaviour because of his or her own subjective biases. For example, if someone talks about hearing voices, they may be referring to a spiritual experience, but a medical practitioner might well diagnose schizophrenia. So objective, value-free study is not easy, because the scientist has views and biases, and cultural or other issues are perhaps important factors. Some say that a truly objective study is not possible. In conclusion, it’s a science.

Personal Morality Essay

Introduction I would not have believed you two years ago if you told me an individual’s single decision could have such a profound effect on not only their lives but that of their family, their employer, the economy and even the world. The life we lead and the choices we make affect more than ourselves, as evident with the current economic turmoil we are in today. If a consumer would not have exaggerated their income to qualify for a mortgage they knew they would not be able to afford. If the mortgage lender would have verified the information on the application and if they found inaccuracy they would have rejected the loan instead of looking the other way; would our nation’s economy be in the situation it is today? Personal ethics, values, morals; however you wish to describe them, play a role in every single decision we make; we want others to believe we are a good person, someone that can be trusted. But as we are painfully aware not everyone has a moral compass by which they live. I believe that we are strongly influenced by our environment; I was raised by two loving parents who taught me right from wrong. I was raised Catholic and attended church every week; I was an altar boy and lector for our church; I had a positive relationship with all the clergy members I encountered and believe this too is part of my moral fiber. Although not a practicing Catholic, I do pray every day and believe in God and that we will ultimately be held responsible for our actions. Unfortunately only 63% of American children grow up with both biological parents according to a report conducted by The State of our Unions (2007). A great number of children are being raised by a single parent who themselves were raised by a single parent. I believe that a lack of a two parent household reflects the current moral climate we are in today. I will concede the fact though that just because a child is raised by a single parent does not mean that the child will lack values or morals; I have encountered several children raised by both parents that have poor social values and make poor decisions and just don’t seem to learn from them. Just recently my wife and I had dinner out and I was debating between several different wines. The server asked if I would like a sample of one of the wines to help me make my decision. I accepted the offer and enjoyed the wine so much I had two glasses of it. When I received the bill at the end of the dinner I noticed that our server only wrung up the wine sample which was at no cost and never charged me for the two glasses of wine. I told our server she had forgotten to charge me for the two glasses of wine; she seemed quite shocked and said â€Å"Oh you’re honest†. I jokingly told her that two glasses of wine wasn’t worth burning in hell for; I gathered from her reaction that most of her customers would never have said anything. I recently recounted my experience at the restaurant to friends and colleagues and I was quite surprised to learn that the majority of them said they would not have said anything; they would have paid the bill and left. I then recounted an experience I had with The Home Depot; I purchased a John Deere riding tractor several years ago while living in Green Bay. Two weeks later I received a voice mail from The Home Depot stating that they would like me to come in and pick up my tractor since it was the end of the season and they would be moving them into storage. I was quite shocked when I received the call since I took the tractor home the day I purchased it; apparently the employee that assisted me with the tractor never completed the paperwork that noted I had already taken delivery of the tractor. When I recounted this story almost all of the people said they would have told The Home Depot of the error. The consensus I gathered from both scenarios is that the tractor’s value was almost $1700. 00 where as the price of two glasses of wine was about $15. 00. For many it seems morality has a price limit. I recently took my stepdaughter shopping; she wanted to pick up a gift for a friend who had driven her to the airport. Samantha picked out a necklace for her friend and also found a couple of pairs of earrings for herself. Samantha and I met my wife for dinner after shopping and while showing my wife what she purchased for her friend she noticed that she was not charged for a pair of the earrings. She asked my wife and I what she should do, and I used this opportunity as a teaching moment and asked her what she thought she should do. She said she didn’t know, and I told her that she was an adult and although being an adult is not always easy that she would have to make her own decision and live with the consequences. Samantha decided she would return to the store and inform them of the error and pay for the pair of earrings. I was proud she had came to her decision but hope that the next time this happened that she would not have to ask for advice and would ultimately do the right thing Conclusion I have been instilled with what I feel is great moral character. I feel my morality is a direct reflection of the environment in which I was raised and I thank my parents, teachers, family and friends for shaping the man I am today. I wish everyone could have had the fortunate experience I had growing up; I believe that the world would be a much better place to live if we all had a working moral compass.

Late To early Americans

Late To early Americans I will explain the ultimate five characteristics of an advanced civilization and describe the causes and effect sequence that leads from hunter-gathers, to the development of agriculture, and then the development of advanced civilizations in the Americas. The early South American Societies were the Chavin, Nazca, and the Moche. The Chavin established powerful religious centers and created influential artistic styles. The Nazca and Moche developed extensive irrigation systems for farming and crafted intricate ceramics and textiles and other decorative art.The early Mesoamerican Societies were the Olmec and the Zapotec. The Olmec designed and built pyramids plazas, and monumental sculptures, developed ceremonial centers, ritual ball games, and a ruling class. They also directed a large trade network throughout Mesoamerica. The Zapotec built a magnificent urban center at Monte Alban, developed early forms of hieroglyphic writing and calendar system. The earliest Americans hunted big game and later fished and gathered berries and plants.Map showing the location of the Zapotec Civilizati...They lived in small groups, as they had to move continually in search of food but eventually developed farming and settled down into large communities. They also developed various new skills, including arts and crafts, architecture, and social and political organization, and gradually forged more complex societies. In conclusion advances in the Americas are very obvious but they all created newer things to survive and adapt to their ways of life, culture, and surroundings. The Americans went from small moving groups to complex societies and developed from pyramids and a basic writing system to the development of a new architecture and organizations.

What to do when you just got a raise but it wasnt enough

What to do when you just got a raise but it wasnt enough   For many of us, there’s nothing quite as exhilarating in our professional careers as the day we get a raise. In addition to having some extra money coming our way on a regular basis, it’s a nice acknowledgment that our hard work and effort is appreciated. However, sometimes these moments don’t go exactly as we envisioned. What do you do when you get a raise, but it’s not quite as much as you were hoping for? The â€Å"insufficient raise† can be a very tricky situation to handle. On the one hand, you don’t want to show a lack of appreciation for the gesture, which hopefully came with good intentions. You also likely don’t want to adopt an adversarial or hostile position with your bosses at work. On the other hand, you don’t want the powers that be at your job to think that you’re a complete pushover with no ambition who can be bought off cheaply. You also want to make sure that you’re being fairly compensated for al l of your hard work and effort. So†¦how do you proceed when you find yourself in this unfortunate position?Don’t react emotionallyIf you’re feeling emotional after being presented with a less-than-stellar raise offer, take a deep breath, relax, and realize that you won’t be doing yourself any favors by reacting on your emotions. Not only will it force calm logic and reason- your best tools to convince your bosses that you deserve a larger raise- to take a back seat, you won’t be doing yourself any favors by letting your boss see you at your less-than-professional best. If you can get a hold of your emotions and let reason lead you, you can calmly discuss the situation with your boss and try and reach a mutually beneficial arrangement- but if you’re feeling overly emotional and need some time to collect yourself, then by all means take it.NegotiateKeep in mind that most salary discussions- from the time you’re hired through every raise- are open to some level of negotiation. You won’t be the first employee looking to make a better deal and you certainly won’t be the last. In fact, your boss will not likely be shocked by a â€Å"counter-suggestion† regarding your raise, so don’t approach the moment full of fear or the belief that you’re entering hostile territory. If handled well, a conversation regarding your raise can be a polite and effective exchange of thoughts that can truly benefit both sides. Consider the raise negotiation process an opportunity to reassert your value as an employee, and possibly even redefine or clarify your position and responsibilities moving forward- which can be really beneficial for all involved.Make your caseWhen you enter into a discussion regarding your raise, it’s in your best interest to be prepared to back up your belief that you deserve more with some strong evidence. When stating your case, highlight what you’ve done on the job t o merit a larger paycheck. Discuss your accomplishments as well as any cost saving measures you’ve been involved with, and if you can demonstrate your value to the team moving forward, even better. The stronger your case, the more likely you are to get the raise you’re looking for.Have you just gotten a raise but aren’t thrilled with the amount? Fear not- all is not lost. Use the strategies and advice presented here to try and salvage a challenging situation and turn the tables to your monetary advantage. Good luck!

Appendix A Review on the Marketing Strategies of TAFE Institutions in Queensland Executive Summary The main objective of this report is to review how the three major Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes in Australia market themselves. The TAFE institutes play an important role in equipping the students with the job market skills. A major proportion of students who complete their high school land into such institutes directly as they will be able to attain part-time or full time jobs much earlier than th ey get the college degrees through these institutes. However, the marketing strategies of many such institutions are outdated. This report conducts an elaborate survey among the students who study in the three major Australian TAFE institutes, the Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE, Southbank Institute of Technology and Brisbane North Institute of TAFE. ... The third part presents the gathered results and discusses the current pros and cons of the TAFE marketing strategies. The fourth part presents productive recommendations to improve the reach of their TAFE institutes among the student community through various innovative marketing ideas. Introduction Background of the Study In Australia TAFE colleges award diploma's which are valued less than the Bachelor degree, but very useful in equipping students with industry related skills. Certain TAFE colleges in Victoria and Queensland are eligible to provide their own bachelor and post-graduate degrees ( Wheelahan, et al, 2009). These colleges offer a variety of vocational training in various fields like mechanics, engineering, finance and construction. Students looking for a quick employment and those who cannot afford university education find TAFE colleges quite useful. Students who finish year 12 examination attain a short term diploma course and secure a job. The diploma course is then used as a partial credit to enter Bachelor degree courses in the mainstream universities. The students, who come follow this path, easily earn while they learn and come out with substantial experience in their field when they complete their degree. This extra qualification helps them gain up to three times more salary than their fresher colleagues. TAFE colleges are usually widespread offering a variety of industry niche oriented training. But many students who complete year 12 look upon them as colleges used by students who get low grades and economically backward students. They are not well informed about the advantages of using the TAFE diploma's efficiently. Most of the youngsters who complete year
